Another story I wanted to share with you guys, this time about one of the reasons why my Volvo XC70 was/is no longer a car I wanted to own and Volvo is no longer a brand I care about. While this isn't the main reason for my selling of the wagon, it is a fairly significant factor.
Amongst the body roll, high insurance rate and beige interior came the Volvo enthusiast community. Car brand communities can be a good thing to be a part of as you'll meet good people and learn a lot of technical info. There are also the badge snobs that think the particular car is the best. Honda people are notorious for being badge snobs. But the Volvo crowd has been just as bad, if not worse.
It started out innocently with members just poking fun at one another but I noticed that there were rarely any new members joining the forums or facebook pages. Then I noticed a girl who posted a pic of her modded S60. Most of the older members attacked her picture and her car to the point where she left the groups ten minutes later. People would join forums for other cars and tell the members how crap their cars were, get banned and brag about it. That's not funny. You don't look cool, you just look immature.
The more I heard about how great Volvos are, the less I liked Volvos. When I started to consider selling my car, I thought about replacing it with a Subaru so I could have a good AWD system instead of the Haldex that is notorious for breaking. I had a couple of people immediately message me saying how dare I say the Volvos AWD system wasn't as good as Subarus. But in fact, the 10 year old Haldex is not that great. Another member messaged me with insults to my girlfriend, calling her a zoo creature when I said that Volvo didn't fit my needs anymore.
And finally, when the day came that my XC70 sold and I bought my Cube, I had people tell me that the Nissan is a deathtrap and they hoped I'd find out first hand how much safer the Volvo would've been. Which is ridiculous. A 10 year old car isn't going to be safer than a 4 year old one.
I used to think I'd one day own an older Volvo and a new one but knowing that those are the people I'd be dealing with if I ever needed help, I must say I'd just stay away al together. Doesn't help that I no longer find anything Volvo makes to be very attractive.
Decent cars but bad people. Sometimes all it takes is a little harassment to drive someone away from something.

Subaru. Before I bought the Focus ST, I looked at the WRX, great car but the whole cult community behind it is scary. I lost a friend this way, all he talks about now is the boxer rumble, AWD and all the trophy Subby girls, and drops the mention of his CVT WRX (which he traded in his older 2.5i for) at every chance he can.
Edit: Though to be honest, all communities are like this, its just that the Subaru community is one of the largest around here. I don't want to generalize but everyone I've met has been this way lol. I mean, its greta that you love our car, but obsessing over it (and nothing else) is silly :P

I can't stand Brostangs. We have a Mustang in our family and I love it, there's a good chance we'll get the new one (if the 'cuda isn't happening, but I'm holding on). However, I hate the association to that dumbass that does burnouts in mall parking lots, revs his engine at women, and challenges you to race at every stoplight. Whenever something stupid happens at a car meet I assume it's a Mustang and that's usually the case.

I'll give your friend the Subby girls. The ones I've met at various car meets have been rather cool and...hot?
I have yet to plunge into the Cube forums but from what I've seen, most of the people are humble and accept that the Cube isn't gods gift to cars.

I have been part of the subaru cult for about 8 years and for the most part, i will agree with you. The exception would be a small local forum in Indiana which I have found to be the exact opposite. It is very friendly and helpful. Yes, there are a few dbags but that is going to happen with anything. The subaru community in Indiana is what has kept me with subaru for the past 8 years.

Honestly I am a distant member of the mustang comunity. However there are some factors that really make me look twice.
There is the BroStang squad that really annoys me, so I avoid them.
Then there are the "Racers" who claim this and that, and must teach everyone what performance is. Hmmm.
There is the Stang Lookers that really rub me the wrong way. Guys who predictably buy the lowest possible model and proceed to modify it to an inch of their life while spending more money than they would have if they spent the extra 100bux a month on their payment.
Mustangs have the rice squad as well. Put badges, body parts and shit that basically does not belong. Subtlety is not their own, and they insist on converting a rental car v6 into a gt500KR lokalike with 200hp....... HMMMMM.....
The redeeming sub forum members, while not unfriendly, they are hard to get a hold of are the handling guys. They are usually found on autocross courses and road races. They eat through tires/brakes/suspensions at an alarming rate. They don't brag, and if you ask kindly will help you achieve your goals. Some kiddies in there too, but far and few in between. This is the subgroup I usually wonder into, and ask very few questions of as they tend to have the explanations well laid out and already covered. I guess these are the nerds of the group.
